For February over at Borderline Hikkomori, for the 14 days up until Valentine’s Day, we’d talk about our favorite pairings, and why we loved them. I decided I’d continue the tradition over here, as it’s something I quite liked. Note that shipping wank with be dealt with the rolling of eyes, and laughing.
We all know that Haruhi and Kyon are meant to be, but what about everyone else?
I do have to confess, a lot of my love for this pairing comes from a roleplay where I played Mikuru, where she ended up romantically involved with Itsuki. But through playing the characters, I could also see that they potentially work together, and it actually makes sense.
There is a lot of questions about how the overemotional easily distraught Mikuru becomes her strong and savvy self in the future. If she were close friends or potentially in a relationship with Itsuki, that could explain a lot. Itsuki would not protect her the way Kyon does, although he would there for her in the series, and possibly build up her confidence while ensuring that she does not becoming dependent on him. Thus she becomes an independent woman.
As it is, Itsuki and Mikuru seem to have a closer relationship then we see on screen. When Mikuru found she couldn’t go back in time in the Endless Eight, she didn’t call Kyon, but rather Itsuki who called Kyon. They also have an understanding of each other, and the amount of control Haruhi forces over their lives then Kyon realizes, leading to them socializing with each other more.
While under appreciated, I think this pairing isn’t so much a guilty pleasure but an actual viable pairing. I honestly hope that if the Haruhi series ever ends, the two become canon.
